Clean Restaurants
Submitted by: Simon Leyland
Describe your idea. How does it work and who does it help?
On a basic level Clean Restaurants would offer a google maps mash up highlighting the official hygiene ratings given by local Trading Standards. Providing the information is not only a good means of communication between the local authority and citizen but a well used website may also act as a deterrent for Restaurants.
The website would also allow citizens to report possible food poisoning. While this would not be highlighted publicly it would provide a source of information for the local authority on possible breaches of hygiene.
In researching this idea there is a similar site in the US - cleanscores.com but doesn't have a map intterface.
What information or services do you need?
Information from local authorities from their inspection reports - a simple 1 to 5 stars would be sufficient.
google maps api interface (I already have a template ready to use - see www.haltonone.co.uk)

see http://eprints.ecs.soton.ac.uk/14429/
a prototype that does what is described here was built a couple of years ago, and plans for a full deployment is underway.

check this publications by Southampton University. They have already built what you describe a couple of years ago:

The FSA publishes this data at http://www.food.gov.uk/safereating/hyg/scoresonthedoors/

This would be really great if it appeared on separate (commercial) websites like toptable.com, so that you would see the scores as you booked a restaurant.
