How green is my 'hood?

Submitted by: Peter Merrett

Describe your idea. How does it work and who does it help?

Allows an induvidual to enter a postcode and see how a region compares to others regarding green energy production, home\micro generation and registered electric\hybrid cars.

(Who\How it Helps: Allows us all to see the growth in green energy generation and in the case of micro generation, informs about what others are doing in their area.)

A list of green initiatives\subsidies offered by the local council and details of offers\discounts from local commerical companies (i.e. roof insulation, double glazing companies). Could include a local forum for green subject discussion.

(Who\How it Helps: Enables people to make changes at home to reduce their environmental impact and offer ideas to the local community. Would highlight government services availiable to people in other post codes).

Maps and GPS points showing positions of recycling points, charity shops and waste depots\skip services.

(Who\How it Helps: Enables people to be efficient with their waste disposal, reduce fly tipping and would highlight if an area is unfavourably serviced by their local council, for example there being no facility for the recycling of old clothes).

What information or services do you need?

National grid data about output from wind and hydroelectric plants.

Council planning permission data about installation of solar panels and wind turbines.

DMV data about hybrid and electric car registrations.

Data from local councils about green schemes offered.

Ordinance survey, GPS mapping of postcodes for recycling stations, waste depots, charity shops.

I love this idea. It could work really well with anther idea I heard about: there is a great tool being developed by an organisation called zerofootprint which is a really impressive mix between a highly sophisticated carbon calculator and a social network and social media site. It has a £12m being pumped into it so lots of potential and ambition.
