Cycle parking

Describe your idea. How does it work and who does it help?
Most town centre cycle parking provision (e.g. on pavement facilities, outside libraries etc.) is provided by the local council, who will maintain a database of cycle parking lcoations. Users will also be able to submit locations of suitable facilities (not random lamposts and fences), and whether these facilities would be secure for late night use. The locations can be plotted on a map and used in route creation websites. Users will be able to find the nearest parking to a particular shop. Mobile users will be able to find the nearest parking to their location.
This will help any cyclist who wishes to make quick journeys, leaving their bike somewhere safe and convenient, but without searching around for parking.
Cycle parking is a public resource, but it is under utilised, because people often don't know where it is.
Location data such as this should also be downloadable as a point of interest file, for use in GPS navigation devices.

This has been considered as a project by the CTC, as part of its general mapping work to benefit cyclists (http://www.ctc-maps.org.uk). The ability to request new parking is also under consideration, to assist councils when they are decided where to place more cycle stands.
Nothing too complicated to do, just some funding required.

Ooh, I like this one. You could add in crime figures too, so it shows how often bikes are reported stolen in each area.
